Luis De Unzaga and Bourbon Reform in Spanish Louisiana, 1770--1776.

Previous histories of the establishment of Spanish rule in Louisiana have centered primarily on its first two officials, Governor Antonio de Ulloa and Captain-General Alejandro O\u27Reilly. This work focuses on Luis de Unzaga y Amezaga, governor of Spanish Louisiana from 1770 to 1776. It challenges previous interpretations of Unzaga\u27s tenure which have traditionally viewed the Bourbon Reforms as detrimental to the colony and viewed the governor as merely benign and transitional in the colony\u27s history. Comparison of shipping records and governor\u27s records from Cuba and Louisiana indicate that the colony actually maintained the same volume of shipping with Havana that other portions of empire did and that it often received exceptional freedoms unavailable to the remainder of empire. The colonial documents show that Unzaga integrated the colony\u27s economy into the new reforms and that he fostered domestic industry. Treasury records also attest to the governor\u27s stewardship which filled Louisiana\u27s failing coffers. An exploration of the judicial records and correspondence of the post commandants points to a stabilized population re-oriented toward the rule of Spanish law because of the governor\u27s conciliatory diplomacy. Unzaga\u27s abilities also aided in establishing alliances with formerly hostile Indians and maintaining peace with the British under difficult circumstances. This dissertation argues that effective implementation of the Bourbon Reforms in Spanish Louisiana took place not in 1769--1770 with Alejandro O\u27Reilly, but in the arduous seven-year administration of Luis de Unzaga y Amezaga

Evaluating the Way Forward in Online Student Engagement.

Several factors make up the successful instructional experience in online higher education classes. With the advanced offerings in online learning, educational institutions are compelled to innovate all aspects of their online classes (U.S. Department of Education, 2016). The innovation can lead to a higher caliber learning environment. This paper advances a simple model for Instructors to follow, an Instructional Online Model (IOM), with the intent of improving student engagement, knowledge retention, leading to increased business profit. Instructors who model the discussed techniques may find increased student’s satisfaction with their courses, leading to the students pursuing further online education. Technological advancement and student maturity are themes identified during this research. These trends are topics for further research

Results from a Multi-Site Survey of Course-Embedded/Peer-to-Peer Writing Support Programs

Although course-embedded programs (such as writing fellows, writing center fellows, or writing associates) have been examined at single institutions in terms of training, faculty support, and assessment, writing center researchers have rarely studied these programs across multiple sites. Our panel provides results from a large-scale multi-institution survey of students, faculty, and staffers in classes with course-embedded writing support programs, at four SWCA institutions that differ in terms of size and mission. This project and research results showcase the perceived value and impact of course-embedded, peer-to-peer writing support

Procarbazine and antidepressants: a retrospective review of the risk of serotonin toxicity

Background Procarbazine is an anticancer agent that also inhibits monoamine oxidase, an enzyme responsible for the metabolism of various catecholamines, including serotonin. Methods A retrospective chart review of lymphoma patients who were treated with both procarbazine and an antidepressant, as well as procarbazine alone, was performed to determine if signs and symptoms of serotonin toxicity were present. Results A total of 65 patients received procarbazine between 2004 and 2010 and were eligible to be included in the study. Twenty‐six of these patients received an antidepressant in combination with procarbazine, with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors being the most common type of antidepressant. No patients in the study were diagnosed with serotonin toxicity, nor did any meet Hunter's diagnostic criteria for serotonin toxicity. Diarrhea, tremor, and shivering were the symptoms from Sternbach's criteria that were further analyzed, with diarrhea occurring 8.54% of the time, tremor occurring 5.53% of the time, and shivering occurring 2.51% of the time in patients who received an antidepressant with their procarbazine. Despite these symptoms, the diagnosis of serotonin toxicity according to Sternbach's criteria was determined to be unlikely. Conclusions In this small sample of patients treated with procarbazine plus an antidepressant (most typically SSRIs), there were no reports of serotonin toxicity, nor did any patients demonstrate symptoms consistent with serotonin toxicity. The authors urge clinicians to ensure depression is adequately managed in cancer patients who are undergoing procarbazine therapy, starting with typical first‐line antidepressant agents.
